In 2019, Pond School PLUS will have new, expanded aquatic offeringsbeyond pond management.  Session options will include opportunities to learn about climate impacts on water, aquatic life on a pond walk, and rain gardens and rain barrels as options for slowing water runoff from your property ALONG WITH all the trusted sources on managing pond weeds, fish management, geese and muskrats and more!  Check us out!

5:30-6:30 Options

 Prevention and Control of Pond Weeds and Algae: Join Eugene Braig, Ohio State University’s Extension Aquatic Biology Specialist to learn about preventing pond weeds from getting out of control and how to manage populations if they get out of hand.  Learn how to safely use aquatic chemicals and understand their labels. 

 

Wet and Extreme!  Weather and Climate Impacts on Water, Wetlands and Ohio.   Join OSU Climatologist Aaron Wilson to discuss the trends in precipitation over the decade and what it means for ponds, wetlands, waterways and Ohio generally!

POND WALK: Join Jim Spetz, Natural Resource Specialist with Medina County Parks, for a visual walking tour of the aquatic vegetation and wildlife in and around the ponds of Wolf Creek. Pond will be sampled for an upclose look at these pond inhabitants.  

6:30 - 7:30pm Options

Managing Nuisance Wildlife Around the Pond and Yard:  Join Caleb Wellman, USDA Wildlife Services, to discuss muskrats geese and any other nuisance wildlife you are managing!   Hear how they cause issues and strategies for detering and trapping, rules and regulations.

Building and Repairing a Pond: Rules, Considerations, and Troubleshooting: learn about what it takes to build a pond including the ideal site, how it changes your watershed, and also how to repair leaks, redirect water, and other problems that can occur with having or considering adding a pond.  This session applies to both current owners of older ponds and those considering adding a new pond to the property.

Applying Aquatic Pesticides: Equipment, Tools, Safety and TIPS!:  Join Mike Durkalec, Cleveland Metroparks and Eugene Braig, OSU Extension,  to learn how to select, mix, and apply aquatic pesticides efficiently and safely.  Experience spray equipment, and hear from those DOING pond management about how they maintain their waters.

7:30 -8:30 PM Options

Fish Management in Ponds: Join Mike Durkalec,  Biologist with Cleveland Metroparks to learn everything you ever wanted to know about fish!  You will learn about winter fish kills, stocking and re-stocking ponds properly, how to harvest and maintain populations, create habitat, and more.  Whether your pond is used for fishing or you want a healthy, balanced habitat, this session is for you!
